The Gathering Season: Solo Exhibit by Reese Lansangan (Oct 4)

IG-Heima-ReeseLansangan-Poster

First of all, allow me to squeal for a moment.

THE GATHERING SEASON

I am so excited to announce that I’ll be holding my VERY FIRST SOLO EXHIBIT of mixed-media collages THIS WEEKEND!!! Saturday, October 4, 6PM onwards, at HEIMA BRIXTON, Kapitolyo, Pasig City!

Click here for the event page so you can JOIN it and invite yourselves!

The exhibit revolves mainly around the idea of collecting things / keeping personal collections. Here’s a blurb I wrote about the show:

“The Gathering Season” is an assemblage of mixed media pieces – “portraits” that reveal the faces of people through the things they choose to collect. Reese’s subjects range from casual collectors with passing fancies, to hardcore loyalists with unshakeable obsessiveness cultivated since childhood.

Beyond examining our culture of consumption, the exhibit hopes to paint individual pictures of the people behind the objects – through their histories, habits, and motivations. Reese urges the public to reconsider their ideas of obsession and attachment, and offers a rationale: that beyond the itch to keep seemingly trivial things, is just the insatiable need to latch feeling and memory onto things that will outlive us.

Yup.

Important points about my solo exhibit:

1) It is FREE. I am inviting EVERYONE to come drop by and say hi, or at least check out the work briefly! Everyone, as in youngins and parents and grandparents! Strangers and friends, readers and listeners, everyone! I’d love to meet you all! This event means so much to me because it’s the first time I’ll ever be showing my collages in a gallery set-up with FOOD and actual VIEWERS and stuff, so I’d love it if you’d be able to come out and support me! You’re not required to buy artwork to come! Just come!

2) I will be performing my original songs on my exhibit opening! Whether you’re a reader or a listener of my music, I hope it would help in convincing you to come if I told you that there will be lots of musical performances during the opening night. Good friends such as Rizza Cabrera + Seed Bunye and April Hernandez of The Sun Manager are both performing! I’m a huge fan of these girls so I know you’ll enjoy them just as much as I do. I’ll be performing my original songs at around 8:30 pm, I believe, so please come by if you want to hear free music as well as see ~art~! Other musical performances by MOONWLK and Zeon Gomez.

3) Bring your friends and anyone who might enjoy an absolutely fun night of art, music,  food, and beautiful things! IF you haven’t heard of Heima yet, it is a home and lifestyle store that is beautifully curated and all sorts of lovely. It is my honor to be showing my first collage show in their space. I’ve been a long-time admirer of their work and it’s so surreal that this is finally happening for me.

4) Use #thegatheringseason hashtag – if you’re posting about the event and if you feel like adding a hashtag, please use this so I can check your posts out! Tag me as well – I go by @reeseypeasy

I’ve prepared hard for this exhibit and to be honest, I am so nervous. I’m not sure who will come, how many will come, who will be interested in my work, that, and if people will actually like them – so many concerns and worries! But I’m throwing that all aside and am committed to just enjoy the night with all my family and friends who support me and what I do!

Featured: Preview Sept 2014 + Solo Exhibit

PreviewSept-1

I’m late to the party, but I just wanna share with you this really cool Preview September editorial featuring two of my pieces from my Space and the Human Race collection!

PreviewSept-4

This piece is by House of Laurel (read, not mine) but it’s gorgeous and it’s the title page of the editorial, named (aptly), Across the Universe. It was styled and produced by MJ Benitez, coincidentally a college friend of mine with whom I did this very ancient photoshoot.

PreviewSept-3

My rocket dress, mixed with a House of Laurel circle dress. It reminds me so much of Pierre Cardin!

PreviewSept-2

My moon skirt + my funnel neck hoop, styled with a BALENCIAGA JACKET. Really.

Grab the remaining copies of Preview’s September Issue if you can! The issue is hefty and well-worth it!

Something’s gathering…

RL-SeptOctDatesAND SOME IMPORTANT DATES! I’ll be making individual entries for these two upcoming (AND VERY ESSENTIAL) events, but for now, here’s a rundown.

This Sunday, September 28, I’ll be reselling some of my prints and stickers, along with a special DIY zine that I made at BGC Art Mart, 3pm to 9pm. Our table will be somewhere within the High Street area, so please just find me and my purple hair! Everything’s really affordable, and I’m sharing a booth with three of my really good friends from Shutterpanda Photography. It’ll be great fun, so come and visit! I’m eager to share my zine with you guys! Hopefully, it’s something you’ll appreciate HAHA.

AND this next Saturday, October 4, I WILL BE HAVING MY VERY FIRST SOLO EXHIBIT OF MY COLLAGE WORKS. It is a big deal, but I’m trying to contain my excitement within the confines of an all caps sentence. The venue will be at Heima Brixton, Kapitolyo (y’all know Heima, right? The crazy beautiful home and lifestyle store everyone loves) and there will be free food and good music! And I’ll be performing a solo set at the same night! SO YES??? I would really, really appreciate it beyond anything I could ever humanly appreciate if you could come drop by the event and check out my works! The event is free, so might as well right? It starts at 6pm and ends around midnight, so there’s plenty of time to crash.

I hope to see you there! Really <3 Your support would mean so much to me! YAY!

Y SO MAD, CHALK?

“Reality and dreams have always shared a certain complementarity because despite the perplexity these concepts bring, the experiences drawn from each continues to influence and blur the boundaries between what is real and what isn’t.

What then lies between the real and unreal?”

Last night, I had the pleasure of dropping by 371 Art Space for Downpour – a tastefully curated group exhibit that features works from Bej Bejar, Ang Gerilya, and my friend Chalk Zaldivar.

It was a touch and go thing cause I had to beat the Makati-EDSA traffic for two gigs I was doing last night, so I was only there for a few minutes. Although I wish I could’ve stayed (and could’ve eaten more food!!), I was more than delighted to have had physical encounters with the works exhibited.

When I was looking around The Collective, trying to find the right gallery amidst the chaos of the night, my first and only cue that confirmed I was in the right place was Chalk’s Dilalah painting – the stark pink hair was unmistakable from afar. I will always and forever be attracted to explosions of color therefore it follows that all of Chalk’s paintings were like flashing signs that resonated well with me. Just putting it out there, but I’m amazed at his ability to play with textures. In all my past experiences of making handmade collages, “texturizing” is something that’s really hard to “force” or create from nothing. Usually, the magic comes with age and a combination of accidentals over time.

Also, I sincerely hope I didn’t look like a creeper taking so much close-up shots of his paintings. I was merely marveling at all the subtle (and not so) details sandwiched in between layers of paint. My favorite would be the word Bitch, seemingly scrawled over by some fat, angry kid with nothing but a jumbo crayon and a motive.

And I also especially love the repetitive flower-cross-diamond patterns across all 3 paintings, and they make me feel like doodling a bunch of x’s on my legs with my Unipin. I don’t know.

I was absolutely, positively smitten with Bej Bejar’s illustration and painting style, which involved faded blueprints, architectural elements, lines that run across paper, and creatures emerging out of borders. But I think I fell more in love with his sculptural works, most especially the one I have dubbed the “Itlog ng pugo man” – featuring a person trapped inside a grass covered glass cage, with a tiny quail egg for a head. The rest of his sculptures used commonplace objects merged together with human forms to create new creatures; displaced from an alternate universe and pasted onto scenes of a normal, lived life. I really am smitten.

I didn’t get to see much of the work of Ang Gerilya (I think they still had unmounted pieces even as I was leaving), but mannn. The subject, the colors, the intense precision on the details all make for breathtaking works.

I still am a bit hungover from the art. Also, my large format photos don’t help in forgetting the things I’ve seen last night haha! I want to extend my congratulations to all the artists of Downpour! Really amazing stuff, guys, I am not even kidding.

Behind The Scenes: Candy Shoot + Thesis

Candy BTS2

Last week, I was photographed in a studio for a magazine publication! Hurray for first times!
Some behind the scenes photos from the Candy Style Diary photoshoot :)

I think the issue where I’d be featured in would not be released until April, May or June, so it’s gonna be a long wait! I wonder how the photos look like, as I look godfrakkenawkward when ~posing~ for the camera. I just tend to glare at it usually.

Candy BTS1

The make-up prep took a lot of time. It was probably too hard to attempt concealing the horror of my eyebags. The solitary evidence of vanity that I own is this bright orange lipstick that I tend to wear when I need attention (loljk) but other than that, I wear zero make-up on a daily basis. It’s just too easy to get out of bed and go to school without having to look too long in the mirror to see if you look half presentable.

Candy BTS3

So the whole make-up process was kind of scary and awkward for me. Not to mention, the girl began shaving and PLUCKING my virgin eyebrows out of nowhere! (I barely even have eyebrows, plus it doesn’t matter if it looks bad or not cause I have bangs that cover them up anyway)  LET ME TELL YOU, the pain was beyond excruciating and I was just clawing at my leg to disguise my panic and pained face. It hurt so much, it makes me wonder why girls even go the extra mile to prettify when we have to pay for it via physical torture.

Had to rush to school after the (really fun) shoot as I was running late for my Polsci class. All of my friendse who saw me with the curls and the heavy make up were all looking at me weirdly, as if I purposely declared that to be “Let’s Go Out There And Get Me Some Boys Ohai I Haz Pronounced Cheekbones and Blush On” day.

Made last year, September 27, 2009

And exactly one year ago, our worlds seem to have been put on hold,
for the moment that gave us time to think about our lives, and how it is fleeting.
Yet we’re still here.
Here’s a piece of history that I sure hope won’t repeat itself.
To everyone who has been devastated by the waters brought by Ondoy; you remain.
